Gestorías

The gestoría is a Spanish institution with no clean equivalent elsewhere: part administrative agent, part adviser, and the trade that handles the paperwork the state requires of you. There are ten of them in Torre del Mar.

What they deal with

Tax filings, self-employment registration, payroll, vehicle transfers and residency formalities. If you have just moved here, this is the door you knock on before you knock on any other.

Ask whether the price includes the fees

This is the most common misunderstanding. The gestoría's fee and the government charge are two different amounts. A quote that sounds cheap may not include the second. Ask for both figures.

A gestoría is not a notary

The notary gives public faith to an act, the gestoría processes the paperwork around it. For a property purchase you will need both. Torre del Mar has one notary, so there is no choosing involved there.

One practical tip: take the complete documentation to the first appointment. In vehicle transfers and inheritance matters, going back for one missing paper usually costs a week.
