That is the useful way to read this sector. A five held up by thirty customers and a five held up by a hundred and twenty are not the same claim, and the ranking below weighs exactly that.

Two practical points

• A sight test and an eye health check are different things. The first is usually free as part of buying glasses. The second is a clinical examination. Ask which one you are being given before you sit down.
• From your forties, get checked periodically. That is when presbyopia appears, and the examination also picks up things that have nothing to do with your prescription. For anything medical rather than optical, the health centre is the route.
