Torre del Mar has four facilities for older people, between residential homes and day centres, on the northern edge of the town and in the centre. Between them they cover permanent places, temporary stays and day care with meals and activities.

Residential home and day centre are not the same thing

A day centre takes people during the day and they go home to sleep, which for a family carer is often what actually solves the problem. A residential home is permanent or temporary accommodation. Some of these facilities do both, and it is the first thing to establish when you call.

The public route runs through the dependency assessment

Publicly funded and subsidised places in Andalusia are allocated after a dependency assessment, requested through the regional social services, and there are waiting lists. Private places are contracted directly with the home. If the need is immediate, the private route is normally the realistic one while the assessment runs its course.

They are worth reading, but not as a score. What decides is the visit: go without an appointment if you can, at a normal hour rather than a showing time, and look at the staff to resident ratio, whether there is qualified nursing on site, and how the place smells and sounds.
