Shops
Hardware shops
There are six hardware and paint shops in Torre del Mar, spread between Avenida de Andalucía and the centre. Two of them are hardware shops in the strict sense and the rest are paint and household chemical shops, which in Spain is a related but separate trade.
A ferretería is not a DIY warehouse
This is the thing to adjust. The Spanish ferretería is a counter shop: you ask, someone finds it, and the stock reaches far deeper into fittings, fixings and plumbing parts than the shelf space suggests. What it is not is a self-service warehouse. For a full DIY superstore you leave town.
What they solve on the spot
- Keys. Cutting a copy is a counter service here, not a job for a locksmith.
- Butane fittings. The regulator and hose for the orange gas bottle are hardware shop items, and they have a replacement date stamped on them.
- Paint mixed to a colour. The paint shops tint on the spot, which is why they sit in this listing.
The buying groups explain the catalogue
Some of these shops belong to national groups such as Cadena88 or Óptimus. It means a small neighbourhood shop can order from a wide catalogue and have it in a day or two, so if something is not on the shelf, ask rather than assume.
