Holy Week

Holy Week falls in spring, in March or April depending on the liturgical calendar, and the processions go through the centre of Torre del Mar. Of everything on the calendar here, this is the one that belongs most completely to the town.

What it is, and what it is not

It is a religious procession, not a show. The brotherhoods carry the images through the streets, often in silence, often at night, and the people watching are participants as much as spectators. Attending is welcome. Treating it as a spectacle is not.

How to watch it well

  • Stand still and let it pass. Do not cross the line of the procession, and do not walk against it.
  • Quiet during the passage, especially in the silent sections.
  • Photographs without flash, and not in the faces of those carrying.

Practical

Streets in the centre close during the processions and the routes change by day. The parish publishes the routes and times in the days beforehand, and that is the source to use. Note that the main processions in the municipality also take place in Vélez-Málaga, which has its own and older tradition, three kilometres inland.
