A joint account here does not work the way it does at home

This is the banking detail that causes the most distress to foreign families, and almost nobody is told about it. In several countries a joint account passes automatically to the survivor. In Spain the account can be frozen on the death of a holder while the succession is dealt with, and the survivor may not be able to draw on it freely in the meantime.

If you own property here as a couple, ask the bank directly what happens to the account and to any direct debits, and take that answer to whoever writes your Spanish will. It is a conversation that takes twenty minutes and it prevents the situation where the community fees and the utilities of a property go unpaid for months at the worst possible time for the family.
