What a small nursery gives you, and what it does not

Fewer children per adult, a director who knows every family by name, and the flexibility that comes from a small operation making its own decisions. What it does not give you is the resilience of a larger centre: fewer staff means a bad week of illness is felt, and the outdoor space is usually smaller.

Neither model is better. What I would do is visit at the hour when the children are actually there, not at a quiet moment arranged for a tour, and watch how the staff speak to them. Ten minutes of that tells you more than the rating, the website and the brochure together, and it is the same advice I would give in any country.
