How the data is made

Every business listing is checked one by one. Each one carries the source of its data and the date it was last verified, both visible on the page. Nothing is invented: when a piece of information cannot be confirmed, it is left out rather than guessed. Businesses outside the 29740 postcode are excluded, even when they sit a few streets away.

Why the ranking is hard

Sector rankings do not simply sort by Google rating. A perfect score from three customers should not outrank a 4.8 held up by five hundred, so ratings are weighted against the average of the trade itself. On top of that, the business's own website is opened and tested, and every defect costs points. The result is that reaching the top is difficult on purpose, and that even the number one in a sector is told what it still gets wrong.
